Sleep Dentistry
General anesthesia is available for patients who prefer to be asleep during surgical procedures and general and cosmetic treatment. Studio City Dental Group offers general anesthesia for both adults and children.
What is Sleep / Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is the use of sedatives to help patients remain relaxed and calm during dental procedures that might cause pain, fear or discomfort. Sedation dentistry is used primary for patients who experience dental phobia, fear or anxiety.
Sedation Dentistry Methods:
IV Sedation
For intravenous sedation (IV sedation), our dentists use a safe and effective medication administered through an injection to keep patients relaxed and “sleepy” while we complete the dental procedure. While the patient will be conscious and able to respond to our Burbank dentist at all times, he or she will be much more relaxed and may not be able to remember some parts of the procedure afterwards.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation is the most common sedation technique used in the United States. Before the dental appointment, patients take oral sedatives, which allow them to feel free of anxiety and fears and help them to relax. The effect of these safe sedatives may last up to seven hours, though the patient will be completely conscious and able to respond to our Burbank dentist’s instructions at all times.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide sedation, also known as inhalation sedation or “laughing gas,” is a non-toxic, colorless gas that helps patients defeat their anxieties. It is safe, has very few side effects and the body expels it on its own. Nitrous oxide eliminates pain, and allows the patient to feel warm and calmed. It has an extremely fast effect, and the patient recovers quickly from the gas. We use this gas on patients who need to be relaxes during a dental procedures. It is particularly useful in children. The patient stays completely conscious and can respond to our Burbank dentist’s instructions at all times.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia causes the patient to remain unconscious during the entire dental procedure. The difference between general anesthesia and other sedation methods is that with general anesthesia, the patient is completely unaware of his or her surroundings, making the use of local anesthesia unnecessary. Side effects may remain for several hours after the procedure is completed.
Note: Remember that some of these sedatives can lead to extreme drowsiness, so it is not advisable to drive yourself home from our Burbank dental practice after your procedure.
